About the Artist

Willa “Billie” Carter
raised in and near the Englewood Community on Chicago’s South side I can still recall my early initiation into art was as a preschooler.  The Child Craft encyclopedia through its intro to literature and arts, particularly Van Gogh’s “Starry Night”,   was purchased by my mother from a door to door salesman when I was 4 yrs old stimulated my  passion for imaginative color, expressive imagery, and poetic narrative. While still in primary school it was noted that I had a gift for drawing and by age nine was noticed to have a talent for portraiture as well. After a 7th grade art class one watercolor landscape I painted of the “School Façade During A Rain” was admired, framed, and hung by the art teacher on the wall in the administration offices of  middle school at Juliette G. Lowe Upper Grade Center until I returned 5 years laier to claim it.

Though drawing and painting mostly in oils and acrylics over the years has been my main artistic focus, I have experimented with many mediums and art forms including fashion and clothes making, doll and jewelry crafting. miniatures and paper crafts,  I have always had a passion for the innocence and nature of childhood and that theme is evident in my work to date which includes many portraits of the children of family, friends, and co-workers and her fantasy paintings of fairies

Above all I feel that my her artistic talent is a gift, and I have an obligation to develop that gift to its fullest potential. Because my family has been my number one priority,  art has often been pushed aside in efforts to meet the demands of being a mother and wife. Life as an artist took a backseat for 30 years while I worked as a nurse to support my growing family, though I did accept a few commissions and sold a small number of paintings over those years.  In 2007 having obtained the desired Fine Art degree, and now recently leaving my nursing career, today I'm ready to focus on art full time,
